The much-anticipated Magic: The Gathering crossover set is now on the horizon as the beloved Final Fantasy franchise makes its way into the MTG realm on June 13.
With this announcement, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the first look at the cards for this hotly anticipated set, which will represent all 16 mainline Final Fantasy titles, with their many memorable characters and iconic moments.
The announcement came after IGN just the day before showed the reveal of the lead commander cards from the four MTGxFF Commander Decks. Each deck pays homage to a certain Final Fantasy game—Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV.
The lead commanders are important heroes, Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y’shtola. Some of these cards will also be featured in Magic: The Gathering Arena digitally.
Fans can take out their calendar and mark June 13 as the official release date of the Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set. It is preceded by the prerelease on June 6-8 at local game and hobby shops.
Representing Final Fantasy VI, the commander is Terra for the deck named Revival Trance. For Limit Break, the commander for deck Final Fantasy VII is none other than Cloud.
The commander for the Final Fantasy X deck Counter Blitz is none other than Tidus himself. To wrap it up, in the deck Scions and Spellcraft themed after Final Fantasy XIV, the commander is Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed.
Borderless and regular art editions are included in the Jumbo Cactuar card, and it can destroy any creature it wants when it attacks. The infamous Tonberry, a mono-black creature, has been given the second appearance here in that it may take a turn or so to charge, yet any creature blocking it will die before Tonberry takes any damage.
Moogle will make a first appearance in this set, represented by Stiltzkin. Bright yellow Chocobos have also been confirmed to utilize the Landfall mechanic, as was shown with Sazh’s Chocobo.
