At this stage, it is perhaps more practical to outline the franchises and brands that Fortnite is yet to collaborate with. Epic’s Battle Royale phenomenon is a vibrant concept of licensed eccentricity. In this, characters such as Hatsune Miku and Luke Skywalker engage in a flurry of viral dances on the top of the digital remains of icons ranging from Goku to Ariana Grande.
The uniformity of it all makes it a bit challenging for the latest series of announced crossovers to truly shine. However, the recent partnership with Legendary’s Monsterverse is certainly the one that stands out. It is unique, however, not only because it has colossal creatures that dwarf most of the elements on Fortnite’s island.
Epic and Legendary last week launched an exciting new collaboration as part of Fortnite’s current season, introducing skins inspired by Godzilla vs. Kong and The New Empire. Apart from the skins, Godzilla himself has made a grand entrance onto Fortnite’s map.
At random intervals during a match, a huge portal may appear and the first player to dash through it turns into a Godzilla. Players who are not playing as Godzilla can unleash a barrage of bullets at the kaiju in an attempt to whittle down his health.
As for the players who are fortunate enough to become Godzilla, the experience includes a thrilling rampage, heat-beaming, stomping, and roaring their way across the landscape. It leaves a path of destruction and defeated players in their wake.
The movements of Godzilla are deliberate, yet this only highlights the immense power and scale he has. The Godzilla created chaos as he demolished structures or harmed players with his fiery breath striking a delicate balance. He feels formidable enough to instill fear and yet it is not so overpowering that he becomes unbeatable.
In Fortnite, Godzilla carries a weightiness that is in contrast sharply with the otherwise fluid and lighthearted movement typical of the shooter.
