A new trademark for Skies of Arcadia has been filed by Sega recently, which ignited excitement among fans for a potential revival of this cherished title. On 16th January, fresh trademarks were submitted for the iconic RPG which was originally released on Dreamcast and GameCube. It included its Japanese title, Eternal Arcadia. These findings were made public on the 24th of January, according to a report by Final Weapon.
The Skies of Arcadia series has been largely inactive for years, especially after the plans for Sega were abandoned for a PC port and a sequel. However, the dedicated fan base of the game has never lost hope, especially as Sega has been busy resurrecting several of its classic franchises.
Initially, it was launched in 2000 on the Dreamcast, this year marks the 25th anniversary of Skies of Arcadia. The enhanced version, Skies of Arcadia: Legends, was followed two years later on the GameCube.
While none of the releases achieved major commercial success, the vibrant air pirate RPG has cultivated a loyal following over the years. Sega has also occasionally acknowledged the game in other titles like featuring the protagonist Vyse in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
Although a lot of original developers have now moved on, Kenji Kiruta, one of the creators advocated for a new installment back in 2020. He urged Sega to revisit the beloved RPG.
Right now, Sega is revisiting its classic roots, bringing back a range of franchises including Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Fighter, and Sonic Racing.
It can only be hoped that this trademark leads to more than just another cameo in a Sonic Racing game. Recently, Eurogamer had a conversation with Sega president Shuji Utsumi about the vision of the company, focusing on a desire to return to creating video games ‘rock & roll’ contrasting with Nintendo’s pop music.
